If you're planning to travel abroad and have an e-visa, you might need to use a share code to prove your immigration status.
What is an e-Visa?
An e-visa is a digital visa that allows you to enter the UK without needing a physical visa sticker or stamp in your passport.
You can get your e-visa through the UK government’s online application system.
What is a share code?
A share code is a unique code you can use to prove your permission to travel or enter the UK, even if you don't have a physical visa.
How to get your share code?
Follow these steps to get your share code:
Go to the UK Government Website: UK Immigration: View and Share Your Immigration Status page.
Sign in to your account:
You’ll need to sign in to your UKVI account (UK Visas and Immigration) or Government Gateway account.
If you don’t have an account yet, you can create one by following the instructions. Watch this video from Home Office on how to create a UKVI account and get access to your eVisa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IqAbBCfBYI
Select the option to view and share your immigration status.
Request a share code:
You’ll be asked to enter some personal details and information about your e-visa (for example, details from your passport or BRP card).
Once you have filled this out, you can generate your share code.
How to use the share code?
Please save the code to your device or print it:
If you're traveling abroad, you need to show your share code to immigration officers at the border or to your airline. They will use the code to verify your immigration status in the UK.
Your share code is valid for 90 days. You can use it multiple times within the 90-day period—there’s no need to request a new one for each trip.
If the 90-day period expires, you’ll need to request a new share code.
Share code for persons under UESS or PS
If you have a digital immigration status in the UK — for example, under EUSS (EU Settlement Scheme) or PSS (Pre-Settled Status) — you may need a share code to prove your status when travelling.
When might you need a share code?
When returning to the UK: If you cannot use electronic passport gates (e-gates) or are travelling with a document that is not linked to your UKVI account.
When checked by airlines or other carriers: Some transport providers may ask for a share code to confirm your UK immigration status before allowing you to board.
To generate the share code:
Sign in into your UKVI account and
Select the reason for generating a share code. For travel, choose “Something else”
The share code will be valid for 90 days. You can use it multiple times within the 90-day period—there’s no need to request a new one for each trip.
Save or print your share code for later use.
Important tips:
Keep your share code safe: Don’t share it or any other personal information with anyone you don’t trust.
Check your details: Before traveling, double-check that your e-visa and the details you provide for the share code are correct.
