EERC's commitment to tackling hate crime

For EERC, this is more than an awareness campaign. Supporting people affected by hate crime is already an important part of our work with migrant communities.

We know that people can experience abuse, threats, harassment and violence because of who they are, or because someone believes they belong to a particular group.

You are not alone. EERC can help.

Our hate crime support service provides support and guidance to people who have experienced a hate crime. We can listen to your concerns, explain your options and help you understand what support may be available.

What can be a hate crime?

A hate crime can include criminal behaviour motivated by hostility or prejudice because of someone's:

  • Race or ethnicity

  • Religion

  • Disability

  • Sexual orientation

  • Transgender identity

Hate crime and hate incidents can take different forms. Examples include:

  • Verbal abuse, racist or religious slurs

  • Threats or intimidation

  • Physical assault

  • Harassment or repeated abuse

  • Damage to your home, car or property

  • Offensive or threatening messages online

You don't have to deal with it alone

Experiencing hate can leave people feeling frightened, isolated or unsure about what to do next. For migrants and people from minority communities, there can also be additional barriers to accessing support.

At EERC, we want people to know that help is available.

If you have experienced something that you believe may be a hate crime, you can speak to us. We can listen to your concerns, explain your options and help you understand what support may be available.

You do not have to be certain that what happened meets the legal definition of a hate crime before speaking to us. If you are concerned about an incident, we encourage you to get in touch.

Together Against Hate

The Together Against Hate event on Monday 12 October provides an opportunity for communities, organisations and partners to come together, raise awareness and strengthen the collective response to hate crime.

EERC is pleased to be part of this important event and to contribute our experience of supporting migrant communities.

We believe that everyone should be able to live, work and participate in their community free from hate, intimidation and discrimination.

Standing together matters.

By raising awareness, supporting people who experience hate and strengthening connections between communities and organisations, we can help create safer and more inclusive communities.
