Meeting in the House of Lords on the Immigration Bill and efforts to tackle labour market exploitation

Yesterday we attended a meeting in the House of Lords co-sponsored by Baroness Hamwee and organised by Focus on Labour Exploitation that looked at the government’s efforts to tackle labour market exploitation and a new Immigration Bill. The discussion focused on Part One of the Immigration Bill that sets out measures to create a Director of Labour Market Enforcement, an offence of illegal working and to increase penalties for those employing undocumented workers. We gave our views and opinions about potential impact on migrant workers from Central and Eastern Europe and ¬†whether proposed measures can lead to decreased formal labour market participation and impoverishment of vulnerable Eastern European workers in the UK.

Our response to proposed changes will be available on our blog shortly.
